For a decade Nic just went by the name Nic Nic, or her initials N.N. - Nomen Nescio. Nowadays she is offically registered as Nic MacNicol, and she wears her surname with pride, as she has the MacNicol hawk tattooed on her arm. But Nic still prefers to go by her first name. Nic. Just Nic.
The Nomen Nescio decade was triggered when her partner of nine years had left her without a word of explanation and Nic sought solace in in Glencoe, or better Glen Coe, and particularly the Lost Valley, a place she made her own. She would wander her Lost Valley day and night, just to get a sense of belonging. Nic had always been a loner - an "oddball" some of her current friends will say - but the break-up and subsequent loneliness shut her up even more. She just didn't do people.
But no one lives totally excluded from the outside world and even someone as private as Nic needed essentials delivered to her. So it was two couriers, Lyn and her best friend Calum, who managed to lure her back into the real world.
Lyn and Nic became lovers and are now living a bit north of Glasgow. But of course things can't be all roses at once.
Nic's best friend is Edinburgh policeman Andrew, who saved her life in her Lost Valley. The pair of them regularly head for the outdoors, when Andrew will drop her off for one of Nic's moonwalks - walks or scrambles she makes at night. Since Nic saved Andrew's life in Glen Orchy, the pair of them are even tighter.
Another good friend of her's is Fitch, who - like Nic - is a real scrambler, and instantly took to Nic. Malcolm took a detour, but eventually got to appreciate Nic as well. Donnie immediately liked Nic, and even more so when the pair of them went walking amid pine-clad forests. Tom, (Andrew's boyfriend), Len, (Lyn's brother), Chris (Fitch's girlfriend) as well as Doug, Donnie's brother, are also part of Nic's closer circle.
Her life gets turned upside down, when Nic discovers - in a rather painful manner - that she has relatives: Ben and Nik.
