My Scotland - Clan Gregor
language

Clan Gregor is a very old clan, although the use of the name itself only began in the 11th century.

MacGregor badgeThe MacGregor motto in Gaelic reads 'S Rioghal Mo Dreahm!, meaning "Royal is my race". Legend has it that the MacGregors are descendants of the third son of Cináed Ailpín (Kenneth MacAlpin in English) himself, but it is a more likely possibility that they descended from the ancient royal family through the hereditary Abbots of Glendochart.

Their nickname is "Children of the Mist", Clann a' Cheò. They earned this title because they were reputed to appear out of the mist, raid cattle and vanish into the thick mist again.
The very nice stone in the banner above is a gift of one of my godchildren.

The MacGregor war cry is Ard-Choille, which means something like "woody height".

pine The plant badge is the pine, the Scots pine, one of Scotland's oldest trees once covering most of the country.

There are many tunes associated with the MacGregors but a traditional pibroch is Ruaig Ghlinne Freoine (Chase/Route of Glen Fruin). This specific tune is so exclusive that even the clan itself has no live recording, only the sheet music.

tartan rob roy The MacGregors have their own tartans as well. The oldest is often dubbed the "Rob Roy" tartan, but its official name is "MacGregor Red and Black". It has been in use for certain since the 18th century.

tartan modern

The "modern" tartan is in use since 1800 and is known as "MacGregor Red and Green".

tartan glengyleThis variant is from the MacGregors of Glengyle.

tartan cardney This final tartan is often erroneously listed as the "MacGregor Hunting". Hunting tartans were only used for hunting and therefore tend to be darker in colour (blue, green and brown). Clan Gregor though, has never had a hunting tartan. This is the tartan of the MacGregors of Cardney and can only be worn by them.
