Catriona MacGregor – or Ona for short – lives in two eras: the early 1600s and the present. Both periods see an equally traumatised individual because of violent mistreatment by a sibling.
Catriona is an excellent marksman, either with the bow or with a gun, but she abhors violence, which makes her a very respected individual of the chieftain's son, Seoras, as well as a highly favoured police colleague. She’s doggedly devoted and incredibly protective of her partner Eilleidh/Ellie Menzies, who is in many ways Ona’s exact opposite. Whereas Ellie is open and carefree and genuinely believes in the goodness of people, Catriona is silent and private, except when drunk, when she will disclose fragments of her past. That past life of 17th century Ona MacGregor is that of the Short Grioghal, the illustrious cateran – a cattle lifter – and the very person Ellie is conducting research into, much to present day Ona’s frustration.
